History of Chung Chan (Wing Chun)

The beginning of Chung Chan in Silum
(Shaolin Temple) dates back to 1600.
The art of Chung Chan was created by
Ng Mui and Mui Han sometime after
1650 and no later than 1700. It was
then passed down to Cheung Ng and a
few other Shaolin students.
Uncle Fong, guardian and protector of
Yim Wing Chun, was the source
behind her excellent martial arts skills.
The tutoring Uncle Fong received from
Cheung Ng was the backbone to Yim
Wing Chun’s art. But because of the
strenuous nature of Chung Chan, it
was believed necessary to send Yim
Wing Chun to Ng Mui for another type
of training. After two years, she
accomplished the skill needed to
simplify the movement and make them
suitable for women. Because of her
accomplishments and contributions,
the name of the principles in the
Chung Chan style became known
under the commonly used name Wing
Chun.
CHUNG CHAN (Wing Chun)
