History of Chung Chan (Center Fist) WIing Chun

The beginning of Chung Chan in Silum (Shaolin Temple) dates back to
1679. As noted and explained by SI Jo, founder of Sui Pai Chuan, the art of
Chung Chan (center fist) was created by Ng Mui AND Mui Han sometime after
1679 and no later than 1740. It was then passed down to Cheung Ng and a
few other Shaolin students. One other contributor to the evolution of Chung
Chan was Tat Chi Tong, who was introduced to the style around the same
era. Sui Pai stated that Tat chi Tong was the main force behind the
remarkable Yim Wing Chun.
Uncle Fong, guardian and protector of yim wing Chun, was the source
behind her excellent martial arts skills. The tutoring Uncle Fong received from
Cheung Ng was the backbone to Yim Wing Chun’s art. But because of the
strenuous nature of Chung Chan, it was believed necessary to send Yim Wing
Chun to Ng Mui for another type of training. After two years, she accomplished
the skill needed to simplify the movement and make them suitable for women.
Because of her accomplishments and her contributions, the name of the
principles in the Chung Chuan style became known under the commonly used
name Wing Chun.
Since Leung Yee Ti is mentioned by Sifu Roper as one of the students of
Cheung Ng (probably around 1730), the Chung Chuan style was more than
likely kept in the secret by the red boat opera and its secret societies far away
from Manchurian spies. The Hung Shun (Red Boat) was also mentioned by
Sifu Roper.
In the process of teaching Uncle Fong, Cheung Ng secretly taught the Sui
family. He did this to preserve the true essence of Chung Chan to Sui Pai and
later Monk Sui he Ho. Sui he Ho lived as a traveler. He had an undetermined
number of students. One of Mr. Sui’s students was Sifu Frank Roper, who
retained and currently teaches this four century old art of Chung Chan, more
popularly known as Wing Chun.
